William Hotchkiss letter to parents [manuscript], 1865 January 29.

Smith describes a skirmish with 11 Confederate vessels at Fort Brady on the James River noting that "the movement with which Lee was to astonish the world" did not succeed, that they had not expected "so bold a move" and that papers retrieved from a Confederate ship blown up by a Union shell gave orders to leave Richmond. He concludes with general war news speculating on movements by Sherman and Grant, sends camp news and enquires after family and friends. A hand-drawn map of the skirmishing gives location of Ft. Brady, the gunboats, batteries, rams, the wrecked Confederate ship, the pontoon bridge the Confederates had intended to destroy and Union and Confederate lines.
